LuxuryRoyal Scotsman: The Highlands
Belmond's sleeper cruise train from Edinburgh through the Highlands with private cabins, Scottish dining, excursions and a Dior spa.
Scotland's sleeper cruise train: two to seven night journeys from Edinburgh with private cabins, a Dior spa and included excursions.
The Royal Scotsman began running in 1985 and has been part of Belmond since 2005. It is a hotel on wheels rather than a day train: nine carriages carry an observation car with open veranda, two dining cars named Raven and Swift, five sleeping cars and a spa car offering Dior treatments. Just under forty guests travel in twin, double or Grand Suite cabins.
Every journey is a round trip from Edinburgh Waverley. Itineraries range from two-night Taste of Scotland trips with chefs Tom Kitchin or Lorna McNee to three and four night Highlands tours via Keith, Kyle of Lochalsh and Boat of Garten, a whisky tour with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and the seven-night Grand Tour of Scotland. Meals, drinks, excursions and transfers are included.
Haulage is by GB Railfreight, currently with Class 66 diesels; Belmond has announced a move to Class 99 dual-mode locomotives from 2027.
