London North Eastern Railway has been in public ownership since 24 June 2018, when the Government took over from Virgin Trains East Coast. It runs Azuma Class 800 and 801 trains from King's Cross to Leeds, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness, and will become part of Great British Railways.

Its scenic stretches are the Northumberland coast between Alnmouth and Berwick, the Royal Border Bridge, the Fife and Angus coast north of Edinburgh, and its one daily Highland Chieftain service which follows the Highland Main Line from Edinburgh to Inverness.

LNER tickets are valid on the Northern North East Rover for the York–Newcastle section, and on the Spirit of Scotland Travelpass north of the border.
