The Jacobite is the longest running regular steam service on the national network, covering the 41 miles of the West Highland Extension between Fort William and the fishing port of Mallaig. The train leaves from beneath Ben Nevis, passes the Caledonian Canal at Banavie and Neptune's Staircase, then climbs to the 21-arch Glenfinnan Viaduct with Loch Shiel and the Glenfinnan Monument below.
Beyond Glenfinnan the line threads a chain of lochs to Lochailort, Arisaig, the most westerly station in Britain, and Morar, where the white sands and Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater loch in the country, come into view. Passengers have around an hour and a half in Mallaig before the return run.
The train is formed of West Coast Railways Mark 2 carriages in Standard and First Class, with a buffet counter. Locomotives are drawn from the Carnforth Black Five pool, with LNER K1 62005 also regular. A morning train runs daily from June to October and a second afternoon departure is added from mid June to late September. Return fares only are sold and booking well ahead is essential.
Loch Eil, the classic curve of the Glenfinnan Viaduct over Loch Shiel, the Small Isles and the Morar sands are all on the left heading to Mallaig.
Sides are given facing the direction of travel. Miles are approximate from the start of the journey.
No. The Jacobite is sold as a return journey from Fort William; one-way tickets are not offered.
Sit on the left heading to Mallaig for the classic curved view of the viaduct and Loch Shiel; the right offers sea views nearer Arisaig.
The Glenfinnan Viaduct and this line appeared in the Harry Potter films, but the train itself is an ordinary heritage service without film theming.
