The Northern Belle entered service on 31 May 2000 as the northern counterpart to the British Pullman, created by Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Since 2017 it has been owned by David Smith and David Pitts of West Coast Railways, whose Class 57 diesels haul it and whose Carnforth base prepares the train.

The train is formed of Mark 1 and Mark 2 carriages fitted out in 1930s Pullman style with marquetry, white linen and named cars such as Duart, once part of the Royal Train, and Glamis. Passengers are greeted with a champagne reception and canapes, served a multi-course lunch or dinner with British seasonal produce and entertained by strolling musicians.

Unlike the London-based British Pullman, the Northern Belle tours the whole country, with departures from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and many smaller stations. Journeys include scenic lunches, race days, castles and gardens and a large festive programme.
