The Fellsman has been a fixture of northern summer steam for almost two decades and is now run by Saphos Trains from Crewe. The train picks up in Cheshire and Lancashire before tackling the two great Pennine and Lakeland routes in a single day: north over Shap on the West Coast Main Line and back over the Settle to Carlisle line, or vice versa depending on the date.
Highlights include the four-mile climb to Shap summit, the Lune Gorge, Carlisle, the Eden Valley, Ais Gill, Dent and the Ribblehead Viaduct. Around two hours are spent in Carlisle.
Locomotives come from the Locomotive Services fleet at Crewe. Carriages are refurbished Mark 1 stock with Standard, First Class and Premier Dining, the latter including breakfast and a multi-course dinner.
North of Hellifield the left gives Whernside, Dentdale and Wild Boar Fell; Pen-y-ghent and the Ribblehead curve are on the right.
Sides are given facing the direction of travel. Miles are approximate from the start of the journey.
Steam normally works the circular section over Shap and the Settle to Carlisle line; a diesel may assist on the approach from Crewe.
Pick-ups vary by date but usually include Crewe, Warrington and Preston.
On the Saphos Trains website, which lists each date separately.
